Here We Grow Again!

At Learning Zone, we turn our attention in April to things that grow. As a part of our STEAM Curriculum this spring, our younger children are learning how different things grow and what is needed for growth. Our older children are stepping into the shoes of a botanist to take a scientific look at how things grow.

Of course, Spring is the perfect time to explore the topic of growth. Our younger children are exploring what is growing in our raised-bed gardens and getting their hands in the soil. Our older children are learning how water travels through plants and how a seed germinates and grows into a plant.

Learning Is a Hands-on Experience

Does all this sound a little too stuffy? Well, don’t forget that as one of the leading STEAM preschools in Nashville we use a hands-on method to encourage your children to learn through their own imagination, experimentation, and interactive play! Our older children will even be working on a robots for farming (with the help of parents). How cool is that?

Learning about Growing at Home

You can have some fun and reinforce your child’s learning at home with some of these simple activities:

  • Plant flower seeds or annuals in the yard with your child’s help.
  • Cut flowers to put in a container. Explain why it’s necessary to have water in the container.
  • Buy a “kid-sized” watering can. Teach your child how to carefully water plants at the roots.
  • Plant a vegetable from seed. Track the progress from sprouting, to flowering, to fruiting.
  • Grow a sweet potato vine. Place the pointed end of the sweet potatoin a container of water. Keep the top 1/3 of the potato exposed by placing toothpicks into the sides. Wait a few weeks for the vines to grow.
